APM ASKS TINUBU TO WITHDRAW FROM 2027 PRESIDENTIAL RACE, BACK MAKINDE

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withdraw from the 2027 presidential election and support the party’s presidential candidate, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, on September 25, 2026, the party criticised the Tinubu administration over what it described as shortcomings in governance, insecurity and economic hardship.

The APM also questioned Tinubu’s absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria and delivered the country’s national statement. The Presidency has said Tinubu was on annual leave and had authorised Shettima to lead the Nigerian delegation.  

The party further criticised government policies including the removal of the petrol subsidy, tax reforms and borrowing, arguing that they had contributed to economic difficulties. These assessments are the APM’s political claims and were not independently established by the reports cited.  

The APM said Makinde, its presidential candidate, should be supported as an alternative for the 2027 election, citing his record as governor of Oyo State and the party’s proposed national programme.

Makinde is already formally in the 2027 presidential contest as the APM candidate, while INEC has confirmed him among the presidential candidates for the January 16, 2027 election.
