Kano Tops Nigerian States in 2026 NECO Examination as Governor Yusuf Commends Students

Kano State has emerged as the leading state in the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO), recording 74,413 candidates with at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.

Lagos State came second with 72,496 candidates, while Oyo State ranked third with 55,543 candidates.

The achievement marks the second consecutive year Kano has topped the NECO performance chart, following its similar performance in 2025.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf congratulated the students, teachers, parents and other education stakeholders, saying the results demonstrate the impact of the state’s continued investment in education.

The state government said it spent more than ₦4.4 billion in 2026 to sponsor students, particularly those from indigent families, for the SSCE. Other interventions include teacher recruitment and training, classroom renovation, learning materials, uniforms and scholarships.

The governor pledged that his administration would continue prioritising education and improving access to quality learning opportunities for young people across the state.
