President Tinubu Seeks Confirmation of Nominees as Senate Resumes Plenary

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the Senate seeking the screening and confirmation of nominees for key positions in several federal institutions as the upper chamber resumed plenary on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, after a nine-week recess.  

The President’s requests were read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary and subsequently referred to relevant Senate committees for consideration.

Among the nominations is Dr. Abdullahi Maikano Saidu for chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC), alongside other nominees to serve on the commission’s board. The Senate Committee on Finance was given two weeks to screen the nominees and submit its report.  

Tinubu also requested the confirmation of Sani Ndanusa as a non-career Ambassador/High Commissioner-designate. His nomination was referred to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening and further consideration.

Another nomination forwarded to the Senate is that of Wakil Bukar as a member of the Federal Civil Service Commission representing Bauchi, Borno and Yobe States. The relevant Senate committee was similarly directed to report back within two weeks.

Beyond the confirmation requests, the President transmitted legislative proposals to the National Assembly, including the National Postgraduate Medical College Amendment Bill, 2026, and the National Research and Development Fund Establishment Bill, 2026. The latter seeks to create a unified funding mechanism to support research, innovation and the commercialisation of locally developed technologies.  

The Senate’s resumption therefore marked the beginning of fresh legislative consideration of executive nominations, bills and other government proposals as lawmakers returned from their extended recess.
