NIGERIAN ARMY ALERTS THE GENERAL PUBLIC ON FAKE SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS PURPORTEDLY OPERATED BY THE CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF
Abuja, Nigeria
9 January 2026
The Nigerian Army has observed a disturbing increase in the proliferation of fake social media accounts created and operated by unscrupulous individuals, falsely claiming to represent or be associated with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
The Nigerian Army wishes to categorically state that the Chief of Army Staff does not operate or maintain any official social media account on any platform. Any account bearing his name, image, or purporting to communicate on his behalf is therefore fraudulent and should be disregarded.
Members of the general public are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant against scammers who may attempt to exploit these fake accounts to defraud unsuspecting individuals, solicit funds, or spread misinformation in the name of the Chief of Army Staff or the Nigerian Army. The public is urged not to engage with, respond to, or share information originating from such accounts.
The Nigerian Army is taking all necessary measures to identify, track, and apprehend the operators of these fake accounts with a view to bringing them to justice in accordance with extant laws.
The Nigerian Army reassures the general public of its unwavering commitment to the protection of the citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the defence of the nation’s territorial integrity, as enshrined in the Constitution.
