The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified its search and recovery operation following the crash involving an ATR-42 aircraft, NAF 931, in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The aircraft crashed in a difficult, swampy area near the Nigerian Naval Base in Igbokoda while on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos. The challenging terrain has complicated efforts to reach and recover the main wreckage, which is believed to be deeply submerged.

The NAF is leading the operation in collaboration with the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, NEMA, Ondo State Government, NSCDC, Amotekun Corps, local authorities, community leaders and volunteers. Divers and specialised equipment are being deployed, while amphibious swamp machines have also been brought in to provide access to the difficult terrain.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, commended the personnel and other stakeholders involved in the operation, describing their coordinated response as an important demonstration of inter-agency cooperation during a national tragedy. He reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to conducting the recovery operation diligently and safely.

Meanwhile, authorities have continued efforts to recover the victims and aircraft wreckage, while investigations into the cause of the crash are also underway. The NAF has assured the public that further updates will be provided as the operation progresses.
