The Federal Government of Nigeria has intensified efforts to address insecurity by expanding skills acquisition and entrepreneurship programmes aimed at empowering vulnerable youths, reducing unemployment and creating sustainable economic opportunities across the country.

The initiative reflects the government’s growing emphasis on non-kinetic approaches to tackling insecurity by addressing some of its underlying socioeconomic causes, including poverty, unemployment and limited access to education and vocational training.

According to a statement released by the State House on October 21, 2026, Dr Abiola Arogundade, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Education (TVEE), disclosed the initiative during a meeting in Abuja with retired Major-General Adeyinka A. Famadewa, Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security

The proposed collaboration between the two presidential offices seeks to integrate technical and vocational education with national security efforts. The objective is to provide young Nigerians with practical skills, employment opportunities and entrepreneurial support that can help them build sustainable livelihoods.

The government recognises that individuals facing unemployment, poverty and social exclusion may be more vulnerable to recruitment by criminal networks. By expanding access to vocational training and economic empowerment, the initiative aims to provide alternatives to criminal activities and encourage productive participation in society.

Arogundade explained that the partnership would strengthen cooperation between the relevant offices to empower citizens, increase awareness and create opportunities for positive engagement.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of a comprehensive approach to national security that combines conventional security operations with education, employment generation and economic inclusion.

While military and law enforcement agencies remain essential in confronting criminal activities, the government is seeking to complement their efforts with initiatives that address the social and economic conditions that can contribute to insecurity.

Famadewa emphasised the need for a holistic security strategy that addresses the underlying causes of crime while strengthening intelligence gathering, surveillance, border security and mechanisms for identifying and responding to security threats.

Expanding skills acquisition programmes could create opportunities for young people to develop competencies in technical trades, entrepreneurship and other areas relevant to the labour market.

With appropriate training, access to start-up resources and connections to employers, beneficiaries could establish small businesses, secure employment and contribute to local economic development.

The government’s broader skills development efforts also include vocational and technical education initiatives designed to improve employability, promote self-reliance and equip Nigerians with market-relevant competencies.

The initiative is expected to contribute to poverty reduction, job creation and stronger community resilience by giving vulnerable individuals more opportunities to earn a living legitimately.

However, its effectiveness will depend on sustained funding, transparent beneficiary selection, relevant training programmes and support that enables participants to apply their newly acquired skills.

Providing training alone may not be sufficient without access to start-up capital, equipment, mentorship and viable markets for the goods and services produced by beneficiaries.

The Federal Government’s renewed emphasis on skills development therefore represents an effort to connect economic empowerment with national security. By expanding access to vocational education and sustainable livelihoods, the initiative aims to reduce the socioeconomic vulnerabilities that criminal networks may exploit and support lasting peace and stability across Nigeria.
