Senate Moves to Strengthen Public Senior Secondary Schools

The Senate is considering a bill seeking to strengthen collaboration between the Federal and State Governments, as well as relevant education authorities, to improve resource allocation and coordinate interventions for public senior secondary schools across Nigeria.

Leading the debate on the bill seeking to amend the National Senior Secondary Education Act, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele said the proposed legislation was designed to address infrastructure gaps and shortages of essential learning resources in public senior secondary schools.
He explained that improved coordination among the different levels of government and education authorities would help ensure that available resources were effectively utilised to meet the needs of schools and improve the quality of education.
The proposed amendment is also expected to strengthen cooperation among stakeholders in the education sector, promote more effective planning and support the provision of adequate facilities and teaching materials for students.
Meanwhile, the Senate has called on the Federal Government to urgently address the erosion crisis affecting Obogoro community in Bayelsa State, where more than 300 people have reportedly been rendered homeless.
The erosion has raised concerns about the safety and welfare of residents, particularly those who have lost their homes and may require urgent assistance and relocation.
The Senate’s call highlights the need for appropriate intervention to protect affected communities, prevent further displacement and provide relief to residents whose livelihoods have been disrupted.
Addressing the erosion challenge is expected to require coordinated efforts by relevant government agencies to assess the extent of the damage and implement measures to protect the community from further environmental threats.
