Tax Reforms Will Improve Lives, Not Impoverish Nigerians, Says Vice President Kashim Shettima

Abuja, Nigeria – March 6, 2026
Vice President Kashim Shettima has assured Nigerians that the ongoing tax reforms by the Federal Government are designed to improve the quality of life of citizens and not to impoverish them.
Speaking during an engagement in Abuja, the Vice President emphasised that the reforms are part of broader efforts by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to build a more efficient, transparent and equitable tax system.
According to Kashim Shettima, the objective of the reforms is to ensure that government revenue generation becomes more sustainable while creating an environment that supports economic growth and social development.
He explained that the reforms are structured to reduce inefficiencies in the tax system, expand the tax base and ensure that the burden of taxation is fairly distributed.
The Vice President also noted that the improved revenue from the reforms would enable government to invest more in critical sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, education and social welfare programmes that directly benefit Nigerians.
Kashim Shettima therefore urged citizens to support the reforms, stressing that the initiative is ultimately aimed at strengthening the nation’s economy and improving living standards across the country.
