Professor Nazif Darma Expresses Confidence In ECOWAS Court Of Justice Rule Of Law

The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice has reaffirmed the principles of accountability and the rule of law within the regional bloc following its decision to admit a case filed by former ECOWAS Commissioner for Internal Services, Professor Nazif Darma, challenging the revocation of his official duties.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, Darma said the court’s decision to admit his case against the former President of the ECOWAS Commission demonstrated that no official was above the law.
He explained that the ruling reinforced the principle that officials of the regional organisation could only be removed from their positions or relieved of their duties through lawful procedures and on legally recognised grounds.
According to him, the decision could set an important precedent for protecting the rights of commissioners and other staff members of the ECOWAS Commission, while strengthening institutional accountability within the organisation.
Darma also called on the new ECOWAS leadership under General Birame Diop to uphold the principles of unity, shared values, fairness and equitable representation in the administration of the regional body.
He stressed the need for the organisation to ensure that its decisions and internal procedures remained consistent with the rule of law and the principles guiding its operations.
