FBI Commends EFCC for Support in Tackling Sextortion and Cybercrimes

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has commended Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and its Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, for their contributions to international efforts to combat online sextortion and cybercrime.

The commendation followed the EFCC’s participation in Operation Artemis, an international law enforcement initiative aimed at disrupting financially motivated sextortion networks targeting minors.
According to reports published on October 29, 2026, FBI Director Kash Patel conveyed the commendation in a letter addressed to Olukoyede, acknowledging the commission’s cooperation in investigations that led to the arrest and extradition of two Nigerian suspects to the United States to face federal charges.

The suspects, Adebola Festus Adekunle and Mudashiru Afeez Olawale, were extradited to the United States in August 2026 following investigations and extradition proceedings facilitated by the EFCC. They face allegations relating to the sexual exploitation and extortion of minors. The allegations remain subject to judicial determination.
Patel praised the commission for dedicating personnel to support the investigations and facilitate the suspects’ transfer to the United States for prosecution. He also expressed appreciation for the EFCC’s commitment to justice and international law enforcement cooperation.
The development highlights the importance of collaboration between Nigerian and international law enforcement agencies in addressing cybercrime, particularly offences involving the online exploitation of children and other vulnerable individuals.
Financially motivated sextortion involves threatening to release private or intimate images unless victims provide money or comply with other demands. Such crimes can have devastating consequences for victims and their families, making timely investigations, intelligence sharing and international cooperation essential.
The FBI’s commendation underscores the role of cross-border partnerships in investigating cyber-enabled offences, identifying suspects and supporting legal proceedings across jurisdictions.
Continued cooperation between the FBI and the EFCC is expected to strengthen efforts to combat transnational cybercrime and improve the protection of vulnerable people against online exploitation.
