AWDC Strengthens Air-Ground Coordination and Civilian Harm Mitigation in Operation Fansan Yamma

The Air Warfare and Doctrine Centre (AWDC) has strengthened efforts to improve air-ground coordination and minimise civilian harm during military operations through specialised training for troops participating in Operation Fansan Yamma in Nigeria’s North-West region.

The training, conducted at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Katsina from October 19 to 23, 2026, brought together 51 military personnel, comprising 20 Nigerian Army personnel and 31 Nigerian Air Force personnel. The initiative was designed to enhance joint operational effectiveness, improve coordination between air and ground forces, and promote the responsible use of airpower in counterterrorism operations.

The programme featured classroom presentations, interactive discussions and practical demonstrations covering essential aspects of air-to-ground integration. Participants received instruction on air support procedures, targeting processes, coordinate systems, location marking and emergency close air support to improve cooperation between personnel operating in different military environments.

A major component of the training focused on Civilian Harm Mitigation (CHM), which emphasises the importance of identifying and reducing risks to civilians during military operations. The sessions addressed civilian harm risk factors within the North-West operational environment, alongside legal and ethical considerations for incorporating civilian protection into operational planning and execution.
Speaking on the initiative, the Commandant of AWDC, Air Vice Marshal GI Jibia, stressed the importance of effective coordination between air assets and ground forces. He reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to practical, lessons-driven training aimed at improving operational competence and supporting informed military decision-making.

Similarly, the Joint Task Force Air Component Commander, Air Commodore CE Illoh, commended the initiative and urged participants to apply the knowledge acquired during subsequent operations.
The training forms part of the Nigerian Air Force’s broader efforts to translate operational experiences into improved professional competence, stronger inter-service collaboration and better-informed targeting decisions. It also reinforces the importance of conducting military operations in accordance with applicable laws, rules of engagement and humanitarian principles.
As security operations continue across the North-West, improved coordination between air and ground forces is expected to support mission effectiveness while strengthening measures to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The initiative underscores the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening national security through professional military education, operational cooperation and responsible conduct in the fight against terrorism and other security threats.
