FG Introduces ₦50,000 Monthly Cash Relief for Vulnerable Nigerians

Published October 30, 2026 · fatima

The Federal Government has commenced a new monthly cash relief programme providing ₦50,000 to eligible vulnerable Nigerian households as part of efforts to cushion the effects of rising living costs, food inflation and increasing prices of essential commodities.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the commencement of the intervention in a statement issued on Friday, October 30, 2026, in Abuja.

According to the minister, the initiative, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), is a presidential programme designed to provide immediate financial assistance to millions of Nigerians experiencing economic hardship.

Under the intervention, eligible beneficiaries will receive ₦50,000 monthly to support their basic needs, ease household financial pressures and strengthen their ability to cope with prevailing economic challenges.

Doro explained that the programme would be reviewed periodically in response to changes in the cost of living, adding that beneficiaries would receive direct notifications before any adjustments to the payment structure.

He further disclosed that the ministry was partnering with licensed digital financial service providers to guarantee secure, transparent and timely disbursement of the funds.

Beneficiaries will receive text messages from approved financial service providers requesting their consent before payments are transferred directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.

The minister, however, warned Nigerians against fraudulent individuals seeking to exploit the programme, stressing that beneficiaries are not required to apply, pay registration fees or engage agents to access the financial support.

He also cautioned citizens against disclosing their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to unauthorised persons.

For enquiries or clarification, Nigerians were advised to contact the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.

The Federal Government noted that the intervention would complement existing social protection and economic support programmes under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, reaffirming its commitment to poverty reduction, household resilience and inclusive economic development.

The initiative is expected to provide temporary financial relief to vulnerable households while strengthening the government’s broader social protection framework.
