Health Minister Informs Global Health Leaders of Nigeria’s New Health Technology Roadmap

Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, has presented the Federal Government’s new health technology roadmap to global health leaders, highlighting the country’s commitment to transforming healthcare delivery through digital innovation, scientific research and modern technology.

The initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to strengthen the Nigerian healthcare system, improve access to quality medical services and address longstanding challenges affecting healthcare delivery across the country.
The roadmap seeks to promote the adoption of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, data analytics and other innovative solutions to improve healthcare planning, diagnosis, disease surveillance and patient management.

A major component of the initiative is the establishment of the National Health Technology and Data Analytics Office (NHTDAO), approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June 2026. The office, coordinated by Dr Obi Adigwe, is responsible for providing national coordination for Nigeria’s digital health transformation agenda.
It is also expected to harmonise existing digital health platforms, establish common standards and strengthen cooperation between public and private healthcare institutions.

Speaking on the importance of the roadmap, the health minister emphasised the need for Nigeria to embrace technological advancements that can make healthcare services more efficient, accessible and affordable.
The initiative is particularly important in addressing the fragmentation of electronic medical records across healthcare facilities. By introducing standardised and interconnected systems, medical professionals will be better positioned to access relevant patient information, improve treatment decisions and ensure continuity of care.

The roadmap also places significant emphasis on data protection, cybersecurity and patient confidentiality. Government officials have stressed that the increasing use of digital health technologies must be supported by strong safeguards to prevent unauthorised access to sensitive medical information.
Another important objective is to encourage private-sector participation and international partnerships. Through collaboration with global health organisations, technology companies, research institutions and development partners, Nigeria hopes to attract investments, technical expertise and innovative solutions capable of strengthening its healthcare infrastructure.
The initiative is also expected to create opportunities for local health technology companies and startups, encourage domestic innovation and support the development of homegrown solutions to Nigeria’s healthcare challenges.
Furthermore, the government aims to use health data and modern analytical tools to improve disease monitoring, identify emerging public health threats and support evidence-based policymaking.
If effectively implemented, the roadmap could help improve healthcare services in underserved communities, strengthen primary healthcare facilities and reduce inequalities in access to medical services.
The engagement with global health leaders therefore represents an opportunity for Nigeria to demonstrate its digital health ambitions, attract strategic partnerships and position itself as an emerging contributor to healthcare innovation in Africa.
The Federal Government has maintained that the success of the initiative will depend on effective implementation, adequate investment, institutional cooperation and the ability to translate technological advancements into tangible improvements in the health and well-being of Nigerians.
