Nigeria Reaffirms Support for WTO, Multilateralism at BRICS Summit

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the multilateral trading system, stressing that no country can achieve sustainable prosperity in isolation from the global community.

Vice President Kashim Shettima made the position known on Saturday, September 12, 2026, during a meeting with WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on the sidelines of the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India.  

Shettima emphasised the importance of international cooperation and a rules-based global trading system, while assuring the WTO of Nigeria’s continued support for multilateralism.

The Vice President also highlighted the contribution of migration to development, innovation and economic growth, noting that migrants have historically played important roles in building cities and economies around the world.  

Nigeria’s participation at the BRICS Summit is part of the Federal Government’s broader effort to deepen partnerships in trade, investment, energy, agriculture, solid minerals, technology and innovation, particularly among countries of the Global South.  

The reaffirmation comes as BRICS members also endorsed the importance of a rules-based multilateral trading system centred on the WTO in their New Delhi Declaration.
