House of Representatives Passes Bill to Strengthen Protection Against Workplace Hazards

The House of Representatives has passed a bill seeking to strengthen workplace safety regulations and protect Nigerian workers from occupational hazards, injuries and other health risks associated with their working environments.
The proposed legislation is aimed at providing a stronger legal framework for ensuring that employers prioritise the safety, health and general welfare of their employees across both public and private sectors.

The bill seeks to address concerns surrounding unsafe working conditions, inadequate safety measures and the exposure of workers to dangerous substances, faulty equipment and other occupational risks that could result in injuries, disabilities or loss of lives.
Under the proposed framework, greater emphasis is expected to be placed on employers’ responsibilities to identify potential workplace hazards, conduct regular safety assessments, provide appropriate protective equipment and establish effective measures for preventing avoidable accidents.
It also seeks to promote awareness of occupational health and safety through employee training, improved monitoring systems and compliance with relevant workplace safety standards.
The passage of the bill highlights the National Assembly’s legislative attention to workers’ rights and the need to strengthen institutional mechanisms for protecting employees against preventable workplace dangers.
If assented to by the President, the legislation could provide additional safeguards for Nigerian workers while encouraging organisations to adopt safer operational practices and improve their commitment to occupational health standards.
The development is particularly significant for workers in high-risk industries such as construction, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, where exposure to dangerous working conditions can have serious consequences.
Ultimately, the proposed legislation is expected to contribute to the creation of safer workplaces, improved employee welfare and a more responsible working environment across Nigeria.
