NATIONAL ASSEMBLY TRANSMITS STATE POLICE BILL TO STATE ASSEMBLIES; TO RESPOND IN 30 DAYS

The National Assembly has transmitted the Constitution Alteration Bill seeking to establish State Police Services to all 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration.

The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, said the bill was transmitted on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with the National Assembly expecting responses from the State Assemblies within 30 days.

He clarified that the 30-day period is an administrative timeframe and not a constitutional deadline.

Under Nigeria’s constitutional amendment process, the bill must be approved by at least two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly before the amendment process can be completed.

The National Assembly says it will await the resolutions of the State Assemblies and continue with the next steps in line with the Constitution.
