ANAMBRA POLICE ARRAIGNS SIX OVER DEFILEMENT, RAPE AND CHILD ABUSE

The Anambra State Police Command has arraigned six suspects before the Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka over allegations involving child defilement, sexual abuse, physical assault, child abuse and unlawful abortion.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects were brought before the court following investigations into separate cases involving minors.

Among those arraigned is Chinedu Chiekwu, who is accused of allegedly defiling an 11-year-old child. Sunday Anele is facing allegations of engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old, which reportedly resulted in pregnancy.

Another suspect, Ugochukwu Okereke, is accused of allegedly assaulting a 13-year-old, while Ebuka Nwachukwu is alleged to have abused a six-year-old child in Okpoko.

The police also arraigned Ogechi Ofoma, from Awada Obosi, over allegations that she inflicted injuries on her five-year-old daughter using a heated knife. Obianuju Okafor was also arraigned over an allegation of procuring an abortion for her 15-year-old daughter.

The Police Command further disclosed that the case file of a 36-year-old woman featured in a viral video allegedly abusing her child has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal action. The woman reportedly remains in police custody pending further legal proceedings.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons. He stressed the importance of taking decisive action against alleged cases of violence and abuse involving minors.

The arraignments highlight the ongoing legal and law-enforcement response to cases of gender-based violence and child abuse in Anambra State. The allegations remain subject to determination by the court.
