POLICE RELEASE 10-POINT FRAMEWORK FOR SECURING 2027 GENERAL ELECTIONS

The Nigeria Police Force has adopted a 10-point election-security framework aimed at strengthening its preparedness and capacity to secure the 2027 General Elections before, during and after the polls.

The framework emerged from the 2026 Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers (CARSPO 2026) held in Owerri, Imo State, where senior officers and stakeholders examined emerging electoral security challenges.  

Key elements of the framework include:

1. Election Security Roadmap: Development of a comprehensive roadmap covering the entire electoral cycle, supported by an election-security task force.
2. Predict, Prevent and Manage: Use of historical data, intelligence and post-election assessments to identify potential flashpoints and anticipate threats.
3. Smart and Intelligence-Led Policing: Greater use of digital systems, data integration and artificial intelligence for investigations, threat detection and operational planning.
4. Inter-Agency Coordination: Stronger cooperation among the Police, INEC and other security and law-enforcement agencies through joint assessments, exercises and coordinated responses.
5. Adequate Funding: Provision of timely funding for logistics, transportation, equipment, personnel allowances and other election-security requirements.
6. Protection of Electoral Stakeholders: Operational plans will prioritise the safety of voters, electoral officials, candidates and election materials, including vulnerable groups.
7. Training and Retraining: Election-duty personnel will receive training on electoral laws, intelligence gathering, conflict prevention, crowd management, human rights and operational procedures.
8. Public Communication and Community Engagement: The Police will strengthen communication with communities and establish mechanisms for receiving and responding to security concerns.
9. Investigation and Accountability: Greater emphasis will be placed on investigating electoral offences and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable.
10. Professionalism and Political Neutrality: Police personnel are expected to remain impartial, professional and accountable throughout the electoral process.  

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has also unveiled a six-pillar operational strategy focusing on intelligence and early warning, training, inter-agency coordination, technology, community partnership and police neutrality.  

The Police said the measures are intended to ensure a secure environment in which Nigerians can participate in the 2027 elections without fear, while protecting electoral personnel, materials and the wider democratic process.
