The Imo State Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, has intensified search-and-rescue operations following the abduction of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and other passengers along the Owerri–Onitsha Road.

The incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, around Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, when suspected armed men attacked two buses travelling from Ibadan to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and Bende, Abia State. The buses were conveying prospective corps members heading to NYSC orientation camps.

According to the police, tactical teams and operational assets were immediately deployed in coordination with sister security agencies. The operation has so far led to the recovery of both buses and the rescue of 10 victims, who were said to be safe and receiving necessary attention.

The police, however, said the exact number of people still unaccounted for is being verified, as reports of the number abducted have varied. Security operatives are continuing intelligence-led tracking and coordinated searches aimed at locating the remaining victims and apprehending the suspected abductors.

The Imo Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, alongside other security commanders, visited the scene to assess the situation and provide operational direction. The command also said it is working with the NYSC Directorate to contact the families of affected corps members and keep them informed of developments.

The affected section of the highway has since been reopened, while security personnel remain deployed to safeguard commuters. Police have appealed to members of the public to remain calm and vigilant and to provide credible information that could assist in locating the victims and arresting those responsible.
