Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu Elected as New Chairman of South West Governors’ Forum

Lagos, Nigeria — June 10, 2024 — The South West Governors’ Forum concluded its meeting today at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu elected as the new Chairman. The meeting, which focused on key issues affecting the region, resulted in several important resolutions aimed at fostering development and prosperity.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in his acceptance speech, paid tribute to the late Chairman, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi O. Akeredolu, SAN, CON. “Today, we honor the memory of our late Chairman, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi O. Akeredolu, SAN, CON. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.

During the discussions, the governors addressed and resolved several crucial issues:

  1. South West Development Commission Bill:
    The forum expressed gratitude to the House of Representatives and the South West Caucus for their efforts on the South West Development Commission Bill. They urged the Senate to expedite its passage, emphasizing its significance for regional development.
  2. Infrastructure Projects:
    The governors commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for initiating the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project and other infrastructure initiatives. They called for further road rehabilitation efforts by the Federal Government to improve connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the region.
  3. Security:
    The forum acknowledged the relative peace in the South West and reiterated the need for the establishment of State Police. They emphasized the importance of collaboration between security agencies and the Amotekun Corps to maintain and enhance security.
  4. Minimum Wage Discussions:
    The governors expressed their support for ongoing discussions on the Minimum Wage, advocating for fair outcomes that reflect fiscal federalism. They stressed the necessity of solutions that consider the economic realities of different states.
  5. Mineral Resources:
    The forum endorsed the Federal Government’s efforts in the mineral resources sector and called for increased collaboration with state governments in granting leases to investors. They highlighted the potential for economic growth through better management of mineral resources.
  6. DAWN Commission Efficiency:
    The governors agreed to enhance the efficiency of the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission. They committed to focusing on economic integration and leveraging the commission’s capabilities to drive regional development.

The resolutions adopted at the meeting are aimed at advancing the development and prosperity of the South West States. Governor Sanwo-Olu and the forum members are committed to working collaboratively to address the challenges and harness the opportunities within the region.
