Sultanate Council Sets Friday, 28th February 2025, as Date to Begin Search for the New Moon of Ramadan

The Sultanate Council of Sokoto has announced that Friday, 28th February 2025, will mark the commencement of the search for the new moon of Ramadan 1446 AH. This was contained in a statement signed by the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu.  

The statement urged Muslims across the country to look out for the new moon of Ramadan on Friday and report any sighting to their nearest district or village head. The information will then be communicated to the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for formal announcement.

If the new crescent is sighted, Muslims are encouraged to contact the Sultanate Council through the provided numbers for verification and official declaration.  

The announcement is part of the traditional process of determining the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, which is based on the sighting of the new moon. The Sultanate Council plays a pivotal role in coordinating this process and ensuring a unified declaration for Muslims in Nigeria.  

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is a period of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community for Muslims worldwide. The search for the new moon is a significant event that marks the start of this sacred month.
