In the wake of a devastating mine pit collapse in Kadauri Village, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, the Federal Government has taken swift action by deploying officers of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to lead coordinated rescue efforts.

According to a statement released by the Ministry, the tragic incident occurred following heavy rainfall that caused the unstable pit to collapse — a situation worsened by the ongoing illegal mining operations in the area. Initial reports confirm that fifteen miners were trapped beneath the debris.
As of the latest update, thirteen bodies have been recovered from the rubble, all found dead. Rescue operations continue in an urgent attempt to locate and recover the remaining two miners who are still unaccounted for.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the loss of life as both “avoidable and unfortunate.” He emphasized the federal government’s commitment to thoroughly investigating the circumstances that led to the collapse and ensuring accountability for any breaches of mining regulations.

“The relevant departments of the Ministry have been fully mobilized to support rescue efforts and conduct a comprehensive assessment of what led to this disaster,” Alake stated.
This incident brings renewed attention to the dangers posed by illegal mining in various parts of the country, particularly in regions like Zamfara State where such activities are widespread. The Ministry has reiterated its commitment to clamping down on unlawful mining operations and strengthening safety protocols in the sector to prevent future tragedies.

Rescue teams, including emergency response units and mine safety experts, remain on-site as efforts intensify to recover the remaining trapped individuals. The Ministry has pledged to provide updates as more information becomes available.
