NIG @ 65: FG Commits to Powering the Nation with Renewables
Abuja, October 1, 2025
As Nigeria celebrates its 65th Independence Anniversary, the Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the nation’s energy landscape through renewable energy initiatives. Central to this vision is the Renewed Hope Solarization Project, a flagship program delivering clean, affordable electricity to millions of Nigerians.
In a statement commemorating the anniversary, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), described the solarization project as the most ambitious electrification effort by any Nigerian government since independence. According to Dr. Abdullahi, the project is a crucial step toward powering communities across the country with sustainable energy solutions.
“The Renewed Hope Solarization Project not only addresses Nigeria’s energy deficit but also brings significant economic and social benefits,” Dr. Abdullahi noted. “By creating jobs in solar manufacturing, installation, and maintenance, the initiative fosters innovation and entrepreneurship among Nigerian engineers and young professionals.”
The ECN, which is leading the broader energy reform agenda, emphasized that this solarization project is expected to ignite a nationwide energy revolution. The goal is a future where clean and affordable power is accessible to all Nigerians, promoting inclusive growth and environmental sustainability.
Since its inception two years ago, the project has already made remarkable strides, providing solar home systems and solar mini-grids to critical public institutions including hospitals and schools across the country. These efforts are bridging the energy gap in underserved communities, improving healthcare delivery, education, and local economies.
As Nigeria moves towards greater development and self-reliance, the Federal Government’s bold investment in renewable energy underscores a determined push to harness the nation’s abundant solar potential for a brighter, cleaner future.
