BENIN-ASABA ROAD: “WE INHERITED THE CONCESSION, BUT THE JOB MUST BE DONE” — UMAHI ASSURES NIGERIANS

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government will ensure the Benin–Asaba Road is fixed despite inheriting an existing concession agreement on the 125-kilometre corridor.

Umahi said the government could not arbitrarily terminate the concession because it was bound by contractual and legal obligations. However, he stressed that the concession does not absolve the government of its responsibility to protect road users and ensure the project is delivered.  

Following growing concerns over severe traffic congestion and the poor condition of sections of the road, Umahi has ordered urgent measures to restore the free flow of traffic and address deficiencies in the project.  

The minister’s position is that whatever the history of the concession, the job must ultimately be completed and Nigerians must get relief on the critical Benin–Asaba corridor.
