CG NIGERIAN CORRECTIONAL SERVICE ADVOCATES REINTEGRATION ROLES FOR TRADITIONAL RULERS

The Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Nwakuche, has advocated greater involvement of traditional rulers in the rehabilitation and reintegration of ex-offenders into society.

The CG stressed that traditional institutions, as custodians of culture and community values, have an important role to play in supporting former inmates as they return to their communities.

He noted that effective reintegration requires collaboration among correctional authorities, traditional rulers, families, communities and other stakeholders to reduce stigma, prevent reoffending and promote productive citizenship.

Nwakuche called on traditional rulers to use their influence to encourage acceptance, forgiveness and support for rehabilitated offenders, while also helping to strengthen community-based approaches to corrections.

He said the Nigerian Correctional Service would continue to promote rehabilitation, reformation and successful reintegration as key components of its mandate.
