The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has opened a new operational outpost in Olorunda, a border community in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State, as part of efforts to intensify the fight against illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse.

The establishment of the outpost is expected to strengthen the agency’s presence in the community, improve surveillance and support efforts to prevent the movement and distribution of illicit drugs within Olorunda and neighbouring communities.

The facility is strategically located along a border route identified by stakeholders as a possible channel for the movement of illicit substances into the community and its environs.

The initiative is aimed at addressing concerns over the accessibility of illicit drugs, particularly among young people, while strengthening measures to protect residents from the dangers associated with drug abuse and trafficking.

The outpost was facilitated by the traditional ruler of Olorunda, Oba Philip Ogunsola, as part of his efforts to support the fight against drug-related activities and safeguard the well-being of children and youths in the community.

Parents and community leaders have expressed concern over the growing availability of illicit substances, warning that drug abuse could have serious consequences for the health, education and future prospects of young people.

They noted that substance abuse among youths could expose them to health complications, disrupt their academic pursuits and undermine their ability to contribute meaningfully to society.

The community leaders also emphasised the need for collective action involving traditional institutions, parents, security agencies and other stakeholders to address the problem and discourage young people from engaging in drug-related activities.

At the handover ceremony for the renovated facility, the Ogun State Commandant of the NDLEA, Commander of Narcotics Tijani Rabe, commended Oba Ogunsola for facilitating the project and renovating the building to meet the agency’s operational standards.

Rabe’s commendation highlighted the importance of community participation and support in strengthening the operations of law enforcement agencies, particularly in areas where geographical conditions may present challenges to effective monitoring and enforcement.

The provision of the facility is expected to give NDLEA personnel a more accessible base from which to carry out their duties, respond to drug-related concerns and engage with residents on the dangers of illicit drug use.

Beyond enforcement, the presence of the agency in the community is expected to support public enlightenment and awareness campaigns aimed at educating residents, especially young people, on the health and social consequences of substance abuse.

Stakeholders believe that closer cooperation between the NDLEA and the community will be essential to achieving sustainable results in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

The community expressed hope that the new outpost would improve surveillance, strengthen enforcement activities and encourage greater public participation in reporting suspicious drug-related activities.

The initiative also underscores the importance of collaboration between traditional rulers and government agencies in tackling social challenges and promoting community safety.

With the establishment of the outpost, residents hope that sustained enforcement, public education and community cooperation will help protect children and youths from substance abuse, allowing them to concentrate on their education and build productive futures.
