Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed Nigeria’s capacity to produce leaders capable of occupying top positions in international sports, describing the appointment of Samson Adamu as the first Nigerian General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as a significant recognition of the country’s potential.

The Vice President made this known when he received the newly appointed CAF General Secretary, charging him to distinguish himself through exemplary leadership, integrity and dedicated service to African football.
Shettima noted that Nigeria’s achievements in sports go beyond performances on the field, stressing that the country has continued to demonstrate its capabilities through the quality of its human resources, the commitment of sports administrators and institutions responsible for discovering, nurturing and promoting Nigerian talents.
He expressed confidence that Adamu’s appointment would further strengthen Nigeria’s presence in international sports administration while providing an opportunity to contribute to the development of football across the African continent.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, described Adamu’s appointment as a significant milestone in the history of Nigerian sports administration.
Dikko also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for approving Nigeria’s hosting of the CAF General Assembly and CAF Awards in November and December 2026, respectively.
He noted that hosting the two major continental football events would provide Nigeria with an opportunity to showcase its organisational capacity and strengthen its relationship with the African football community.
Adamu was appointed CAF General Secretary on Sunday, November 1, 2026, following a recruitment exercise conducted by the continental football governing body.
His appointment marks a new chapter for Nigeria’s representation in the administration of African football.
