Minister Idris Assures Nigerians Over AI Interference Ahead Of 2027 Elections

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reassured Nigerians not to panic over the potential interference of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the country’s 2027 general elections, assuring that the Federal Government is taking proactive measures to address the emerging threat.

Idris said the government was engaging strategically with developed countries across the world to strengthen its capacity to tackle the misuse of Artificial Intelligence before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
The Minister gave the assurance while receiving the newly deployed British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Peter Vowles, during a meeting focused on strengthening diplomatic relations and cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Discussions at the meeting centred on enhancing intelligence sharing and collaboration to address the growing challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence, fake news, misinformation and disinformation.
Idris stressed that international partnerships and the exchange of credible intelligence would play important roles in protecting Nigeria’s information space and preventing the spread of misleading content capable of undermining public trust and democratic processes.
He reaffirmed that the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, under his leadership, remains committed to its responsibility of sanitising the nation’s information ecosystem and promoting access to credible and reliable information.
The Minister also emphasised the need for sustained collaboration with international partners to strengthen information management and ensure that emerging technologies are not exploited to mislead citizens or disrupt the electoral process.
