FG DECLARES OCTOBER 1 PUBLIC HOLIDAY FOR 66TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The declaration is expected to give Nigerians across the country the opportunity to mark the anniversary and reflect on the nation’s journey since gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1960.

The holiday will also provide an opportunity for citizens to celebrate Nigeria’s national identity and achievements while reflecting on the challenges facing the country and the need for continued efforts toward national development, unity and economic progress.

Government officials are expected to use the occasion to highlight ongoing programmes and initiatives aimed at strengthening the economy, improving infrastructure and enhancing the welfare of citizens.

The Independence Day celebration traditionally features official addresses, commemorative activities and other events organised by government institutions and communities across the country.
