Trade Unions Demands: Federal Government Meets With Organized Labour

Published October 23, 2026 · Salama

The Federal Government says it is engaging organised labour to address recent demands presented by workers’ unions, following a meeting that ended without a resolution on all the issues raised.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) had presented key demands, including a reduction in petrol prices to 2024 levels, renegotiation of the national minimum wage, and the implementation of previously agreed tax reliefs and allowances.

In a press release issued by its Acting General Secretary, Comrade Benson Upah, the NLC disclosed that the meeting, held on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at the instance of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, did not resolve all the demands presented by organised labour.

Consequently, the minister requested an adjournment of the meeting until Tuesday, October 27, 2026, to allow all parties to undertake further consultations before returning to the dialogue table.

The NLC reiterated its commitment to ongoing dialogue with the Federal Government, stressing the importance of addressing workers’ concerns and reaching mutually acceptable resolutions.

However, the labour union warned against indefinite delays in resolving the outstanding issues, noting that it would consult with its organs before determining its next course of action.

The development highlights the continuing discussions between the Federal Government and organised labour over workers’ welfare, rising living costs and the implementation of previously agreed measures.
