The Yobe State House of Assembly has approved the establishment of a State Police Service as part of its resolutions on proposed alterations to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The proposed constitutional amendment bills were transmitted by the National Assembly to state legislatures for consideration and approval in line with the constitutional amendment process.

The resolution was reached during plenary following deliberations by lawmakers on the proposed amendments, which require the approval of at least two-thirds of the state Houses of Assembly to advance the constitutional alteration process.

Speaking on the resolution, the Speaker of the House, Chiroma Buba Mashio, explained that the bills were forwarded to state legislatures to enable lawmakers to consider and vote on the proposed changes in accordance with constitutional requirements.

Mashio clarified that the Assembly’s position on the establishment of a State Police Service was aimed at providing a constitutional framework that would allow states to operate their own police services alongside the existing Nigeria Police Force.

He noted that the proposal formed part of ongoing national discussions on security sector reform, which seek to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to address emerging security challenges.

The proposed constitutional alterations cover 26 bills seeking amendments to various provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

The Yobe Assembly’s approval of the State Police proposal reflects its position on the proposed constitutional changes, which seek to establish a legal framework for state-level policing as part of broader efforts to improve security and strengthen law enforcement across the country.
