House of Reps Urges Executive on MTEF
The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Executive to submit the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) for the 2027 national budget promptly to allow lawmakers sufficient time to scrutinise the government’s fiscal projections and facilitate the timely passage of the Appropriation Bill.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, made the call on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, during plenary resumption at the National Assembly in Abuja following the House’s annual recess.
Abbas stressed that early submission of the MTEF would give lawmakers adequate time to examine the government’s revenue projections, expenditure plans, borrowing requirements and other economic assumptions that will guide the preparation of the 2027 budget.
The Medium-Term Expenditure Framework is a key fiscal planning document that outlines the government’s expected revenue and spending over a three-year period. It provides the foundation for preparing the annual national budget and helps align government expenditure with national economic priorities.
The Speaker’s appeal comes as the House seeks to strengthen its legislative oversight responsibilities and improve the budget approval process. He also proposed a 100-day legislative programme aimed at accelerating work on pending bills, clearing outstanding committee reports and improving the performance of the National Assembly.
Abbas urged lawmakers to remain focused on their constitutional duties despite growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, emphasising the importance of effective legislation and accountability in public administration.
The House is expected to prioritise the scrutiny of the 2027 fiscal framework to ensure that budget proposals receive adequate legislative consideration before approval. Timely submission and examination of the document are essential to promoting transparency, strengthening fiscal discipline and ensuring that public resources are allocated in line with the country’s development needs.
