The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has reconstructed the Okwu Owerre Civic Hall and provided a 10,000-capacity water storage facility alongside a solar-powered industrial borehole for the people of Uzoubi-Umuna in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.

The projects, executed under the Nigerian Navy’s Special Intervention Quick Impact Project Scheme, are aimed at improving access to essential amenities, strengthening community development and promoting peaceful coexistence between the military and host communities.

Beatrice Anyiam reports that the projects form part of the Nigerian Navy’s Civil-Military Cooperation initiatives, which seek to address the needs of communities while building stronger relationships between the military and the civilian population.

The reconstructed Okwu Owerre Civic Hall, popularly known as Obi Okonko, is expected to provide a more conducive environment for community meetings, traditional gatherings, social activities and other important engagements. The rehabilitation of the facility is also expected to enhance its role as a centre for unity, dialogue and collective decision-making among residents.

In addition, the provision of a 10,000-capacity water storage facility, complete with a distribution network and a solar-powered industrial borehole, is expected to improve access to water for households and other community needs. The solar-powered system will also help reduce dependence on conventional electricity sources, supporting a more reliable water supply.

Inaugurating the projects on behalf of the Chief of the Naval Staff, the Chief of Accounts and Budget, Rear Admiral Omoyola Olukoya, reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to initiatives that promote sustainable development and improve the welfare of Nigerians.

He noted that the Navy recognises the importance of community development in strengthening security, maintaining peace and creating an environment where economic and social activities can thrive.

According to him, providing essential infrastructure in host communities is an important aspect of civil-military relations, as it helps build trust, encourages cooperation and strengthens the bond between security agencies and the people they serve.

The Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Okehie, who hails from the community and facilitated the projects, expressed appreciation to the Chief of the Naval Staff for his visionary leadership and commitment to improving the welfare of communities across the country.

He noted that the projects would provide practical benefits to residents, particularly through improved access to water and the availability of a renovated public gathering space.

Community leaders and residents welcomed the intervention, describing the facilities as valuable additions to the area’s infrastructure. They also pledged to protect, maintain and use the facilities responsibly to ensure that the benefits are sustained for present and future generations.

The projects underscore the importance of collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and local communities in addressing developmental needs while promoting mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.

The inauguration ceremony featured the presentation of souvenirs to the Chief of the Naval Staff, the project facilitator and other dignitaries in recognition of their contributions to the successful completion of the projects.
