The Commander, Headquarters Sector 2, Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), Brigadier General Edet Effiong, has charged troops of the 159 Battalion in Geidam, Yobe State, to maintain the highest standards of discipline, shun drug abuse, respect law-abiding citizens and remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities.

General Effiong gave the charge on Friday, October 9, 2026, during an official visit to the Battalion Headquarters in Geidam, where he addressed personnel on the importance of professionalism, responsible conduct and dedication to military service.

The Commander emphasised that discipline, emotional control and respect for established military ethics are essential to achieving operational success, particularly in the ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations across the North-East region.

He noted that the conduct of military personnel, whether on duty or off duty, has a direct impact on the reputation of the Nigerian Army and the level of public confidence in the military. He therefore urged the troops to demonstrate integrity, restraint and responsibility in their daily activities.

General Effiong specifically warned personnel against the use of illicit drugs, describing drug abuse as a serious threat to sound judgement, combat readiness, discipline and effective decision-making in the field.

He explained that soldiers must remain mentally alert and physically prepared to respond to security threats, stressing that any behaviour capable of weakening operational effectiveness or compromising the safety of fellow personnel must be avoided.

The Commander further encouraged the troops to uphold the core values of the Nigerian Army by remaining focused on their assignments, obeying lawful orders and avoiding misconduct that could bring the Service into disrepute.

Addressing the relationship between military personnel and civilians, General Effiong reminded the troops that protecting the lives and property of law-abiding citizens remains a fundamental responsibility of the Armed Forces.

He cautioned personnel against allowing operational pressure, fatigue or personal frustrations to influence their interactions with members of the public. According to him, troops must exercise restraint and treat civilians with dignity, fairness and respect at all times.

He stressed that respect for human rights and adherence to professional standards are essential to building trust between the military and the communities in which personnel operate.

The Commander noted that public cooperation remains important in addressing security challenges, particularly in areas affected by terrorism and insurgency. He encouraged the troops to maintain cordial relationships with residents, adding that responsible conduct can strengthen confidence in the military and support ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability.

On personnel welfare, General Effiong urged the soldiers to maintain a healthy balance between their military responsibilities and family obligations despite the demanding nature of their assignments.

He observed that regular communication with family members and responsible management of domestic affairs could contribute to emotional stability, improved morale and greater concentration on operational duties.

The Commander encouraged the troops to remain supportive of their families while continuing to demonstrate commitment to their professional responsibilities. He noted that attention to personal well-being and family relationships can play an important role in sustaining morale during challenging deployments.

General Effiong also charged the personnel to remain loyal, dedicated and vigilant in the discharge of their duties. He urged them to sustain cooperation with other security agencies and maintain positive relationships with civilians as part of broader efforts to address security challenges in the North-East.

He reiterated that discipline, professionalism, respect for human rights and commitment to constitutional responsibilities are fundamental standards expected of every soldier.

The Commander concluded by urging the troops to remain steadfast in their mission to protect the nation, safeguard law-abiding citizens and contribute to the restoration of lasting peace and security across the North-East.

The visit featured a tour of facilities within the battalion, inspection of Forward Operating Bases, signing of the visitors’ book and group photographs.

The engagement formed part of the command’s leadership and operational oversight activities aimed at reinforcing military discipline, assessing facilities and encouraging personnel to maintain high standards of professionalism in the performance of their duties.
