EFCC Sets the Record Straight on UUTH Incident

Abuja, Nigeria — May 15, 2026

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has issued a clarification following public reactions to an incident involving operatives of its Uyo Zonal Directorate and staff members of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.

In a statement released by the Commission, the EFCC explained that the presence of its operatives at the hospital on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, was strictly administrative and aimed at facilitating the authentication of a document, contrary to reports suggesting that the operatives carried out arrests at the facility.
The Commission stated that no arrests were made during the visit and maintained that hospital staff who accompanied EFCC operatives to the Uyo Zonal Command were neither detained nor subjected to unlawful treatment.

Responding to allegations of brutality against hospital staff, the EFCC expressed outrage over the claims, noting that it had not seen any physical evidence indicating bodily harm or injuries to any of the individuals involved, including those who later addressed the media on the matter.

Nevertheless, the anti-graft agency said it had ordered a full investigation into the incident, stressing that any officer found to have acted outside the Commission’s Standard Operating Procedures would face appropriate sanctions.

The Commission also acknowledged the interventions and concerns of stakeholders working towards an amicable resolution of the issue. It reassured the public and medical personnel at UUTH that the May 12 incident was an isolated occurrence and should not be manipulated by individuals seeking to undermine the country’s anti-corruption efforts.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the EFCC emphasized that it remains respectful of the rights of all Nigerians while continuing to carry out its statutory mandate without intimidation or encroachment on the fundamental rights of citizens.
