Niger State @50: Information Minister Urges Nigerlites to Support Government in Growing the Economy
Minna, February 4, 2026
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has urged the people of Niger State, popularly known as Nigerlites, to support both the state and Federal Governments in their collective efforts to grow and strengthen the Nigerian economy.
The Minister made the call during activities marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of Niger State, describing the golden jubilee as more than a ceremonial milestone. According to him, Niger State at fifty represents “a testament to resilience, shared sacrifice, and the enduring hope of a people committed to progress.”
In a statement issued to commemorate the anniversary, Idris said the jubilee provides an opportunity to reflect on the collective journey of the people of the state — their achievements, challenges, and the promise that lies ahead.
“As Niger State marks its golden jubilee, it is a celebration of a collective journey of its people, their achievements, struggles, and the hope for a greater future,” the Minister stated.
He noted that the journey towards a truly united, prosperous, and inclusive Niger State remains ongoing. The Minister highlighted that under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, deliberate and strategic efforts are being implemented to revitalise the Nigerian economy across the federation.
Idris explained that Niger State continues to benefit from this national vision, particularly in the areas of economic growth, infrastructure renewal, and institutional reforms aimed at improving governance and service delivery.
The Minister therefore called on Nigerlites to rally behind the Governor of Niger State, Umaru Mohammed Bago, stressing that collective support is critical to achieving sustainable growth and development in the state.
Niger State was created in 1976 alongside Imo, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, and Osun States. Fondly referred to as the “Power State,” it occupies a unique position in Nigeria’s history as the largest state in the federation by landmass. The state also contributed a significant portion of land to the present Federal Capital Territory and is richly endowed with abundant natural resources.
As the state celebrates 50 years of existence, the Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to working with the Niger State Government and its people to unlock the state’s vast potential for the benefit of current and future generations.
