Tackling Deforestation: FG/Yobe Govt. Distribute 3,500 Clean Cooking Stoves
Damaturu, Yobe State
February 2026
The Federal Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the Yobe State Government, has commenced the distribution of 3,500 clean cooking stoves produced with local technology to vulnerable citizens across the 17 local government areas of Yobe State.
The initiative was officially launched at the Yobe State Ministry of Environment along Gujba Road, Damaturu, and is designed to curb deforestation, mitigate the effects of climate change, and improve access to safer, cleaner and more efficient household cooking solutions.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, described climate change—largely driven by persistent greenhouse gas emissions from human activities—as a major global challenge that demands urgent and collective action.
He explained that the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, which supports the distribution of clean and efficient cooking stoves nationwide, reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to reducing emissions in line with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under international climate agreements.
Alhaji Karasuwa noted that the Yobe State Government is complementing the Federal Government’s efforts through the Ministry of Environment’s Alternative Energy Programme, aimed at promoting cleaner energy use at the household level.
According to him, the state government under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni had earlier procured and distributed 1,000 units of 6kg gas cylinders, 500 Jiko-Koa stoves, 500 Save80 stoves, and 500 Munco stoves free of charge to households across the state, as part of measures to reduce emissions from residential cooking.
The Commissioner congratulated beneficiaries selected for the current phase of the Presidential Initiative and urged them to make proper use of the stoves, stressing that the clean cooking devices would help safeguard women’s health, reduce household air pollution, and ease pressure on forest resources.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Maidala Beleri Bularafa, commended the Federal Government for the timely intervention, describing it as a critical step towards environmental sustainability and improved living conditions for residents of the state.
