Nigeria, Morocco Pledge to Advance Major Gas Pipeline Deal

Abuja, Nigeria, May 7, 2026

Nigeria and Morocco have agreed to deepen cooperation in energy, agriculture, and trade following a high-level phone conversation between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.

According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions centred on the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, also known as the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline project, a major infrastructure initiative expected to enhance regional energy security and economic integration along West Africa’s Atlantic coast.

The ministers described the project as a transformative development for the continent, noting that technical studies conducted by NNPC Limited and Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines have been completed.

An intergovernmental agreement for the project is expected to be signed later this year by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and King Mohammed VI.

Beyond energy cooperation, both countries also explored partnerships in fertiliser production and distribution as part of broader efforts to strengthen food security across Africa.

The ministers further discussed plans to revive the Nigeria-Morocco Business Council and leverage opportunities provided by the African Continental Free Trade Area and a bilateral double taxation treaty to expand economic cooperation.

Bianca Ojukwu also accepted an invitation for an official visit to Morocco, with both sides expressing optimism that continued engagement would strengthen bilateral relations and support Africa’s long-term development goals.
