NDC NATIONAL CONVENTION IN PROGRESS AHEAD OF ITS PRIMARY

ABUJA, NIGERIA – MAY 9, 2026

The maiden National Convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is currently underway in Abuja ahead of the party’s planned primary elections.
Timothy Yusuf reports that the NDC is a newly registered political party officially recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in February 2026.
The convention is expected to ratify the party’s protem national officers, who will subsequently take over the administration and affairs of the party as it prepares to strengthen its structures nationwide.

Prominent political figures attending the convention include the National Leader of the party, Senator Seriake Dickson, former Governor of Kano State Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who recently defected to the NDC.

Several party members, stakeholders, and supporters from across the country are also participating in the gathering, which is seen as a significant step in the party’s efforts to position itself ahead of future electoral contests.
