PRESIDENT TINUBU APPROVES EXPANSION OF PiCNG MANDATE TO INCLUDE ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Ibadan, Nigeria,March 27, 2026
Nigeria is set to take another major step toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation following the approval by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to expand the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to include electric vehicles (EVs).
The announcement, shared via Aso Villa Digital, signals the Federal Government’s growing commitment to energy diversification and environmental sustainability. The expanded mandate will see the PiCNG initiative evolve beyond compressed natural gas to embrace electric mobility solutions across the country.
Originally introduced to cushion the effects of rising fuel costs and reduce reliance on petrol, the PiCNG programme has already begun promoting the adoption of gas-powered vehicles. With the inclusion of electric vehicles, the initiative is expected to further drive innovation and investment in Nigeria’s transport and energy sectors.
Experts believe the move will accelerate the development of key infrastructure such as EV charging stations, local assembly plants, and technical support systems. It is also expected to create new job opportunities while positioning Nigeria as a forward-looking player in the global transition to green energy.
The policy aligns with international climate goals by encouraging reduced carbon emissions and promoting cleaner alternatives to traditional fossil fuels. For Nigerians, it could mean access to more efficient and cost-effective transportation options over time.
Stakeholders have described the decision as a strategic and timely intervention, noting that embracing both gas and electric solutions places Nigeria on a balanced path toward achieving long-term energy security and environmental sustainability.
The Tinubu administration continues to implement reforms aimed at modernizing critical sectors of the economy, with the expanded PiCNG mandate standing out as a key milestone in the nation’s green transition journey.
