Nigeria–UK Collaboration on Freedom of Religion and National Unity
Abuja, Nigeria – May 19, 2026
The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting freedom of religion, peaceful coexistence, and national unity through strengthened collaboration with the United Kingdom.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this during a high-level engagement involving representatives of the Nigerian and British governments focused on fostering religious tolerance and strengthening social cohesion across communities.
According to the minister, Nigeria remains committed to protecting the constitutional rights of all citizens regardless of faith, ethnicity, or background, noting that religious harmony is essential to sustainable development and national stability.
He emphasized the importance of dialogue, mutual understanding, and inclusive governance in addressing issues capable of threatening unity, while commending the United Kingdom for its continued support in advancing peacebuilding initiatives and interfaith cooperation in Nigeria.
The collaboration between both countries is expected to deepen efforts aimed at countering religious intolerance, promoting human rights, and supporting community-based initiatives that encourage peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.
Officials at the meeting also highlighted the need for stronger partnerships between government institutions, religious leaders, civil society organisations, and international partners to build trust and strengthen democratic values.
The Nigerian government reiterated that national unity remains a priority and pledged to continue working with global partners to uphold freedom of religion and ensure peaceful coexistence throughout the country.
Participants at the engagement expressed optimism that sustained Nigeria–UK cooperation would further strengthen social harmony and contribute to long-term peace and development in Nigeria.
