PORT HARCOURT, NIGERIA – MAY 20, 2026
Siminalayi Fubara has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries scheduled to hold on Thursday in Rivers State.
In a personally signed statement titled “My Decision to Withdraw from the Rivers State Gubernatorial Primaries,” released on Wednesday night, the Rivers State governor announced his decision to step down from the race and pledged full support for whoever emerges as the party’s candidate.
Fubara stated that his decision was taken after careful reflection and consultations with political stakeholders and supporters across the state.
According to the governor, unity, stability and the collective interest of the party remain more important than personal ambition, stressing that he remains committed to the progress and success of the APC in Rivers State.
He assured party members and supporters that he would work closely with the eventual flag bearer to ensure victory for the APC in the forthcoming governorship election.
The governor also called on his supporters to remain peaceful, loyal and committed to the ideals of the party, urging them to rally behind the candidate that emerges from the primaries.
Fubara’s withdrawal is expected to reshape the political landscape ahead of the APC governorship primaries, with party stakeholders intensifying consultations ahead of Thursday’s exercise.
