FG Deepens Livestock Reforms with Ranching Policy and Tracking System

ABUJA, NIGERIA – MAY 22, 2026

The Federal Government has intensified ongoing reforms in the livestock sector with the introduction of a national ranching policy and a comprehensive livestock tracking system aimed at boosting productivity, enhancing security, and modernizing animal husbandry practices across the country.

The Minister of Livestock Development said the initiative forms part of broader efforts by the administration to transform the livestock industry into a major contributor to national economic growth while addressing persistent conflicts between farmers and herders.

According to the ministry, the ranching policy will encourage settled livestock management, improve animal welfare, and support increased meat and dairy production. The government also noted that the policy would create opportunities for private sector investment and employment generation within the agricultural value chain.

As part of the reforms, authorities are deploying a digital livestock tracking and identification system designed to monitor animal movement nationwide. Officials explained that the technology would help curb cattle rustling, improve disease surveillance, strengthen border monitoring, and ensure traceability in livestock trade.
The Federal Government added that the tracking system would provide reliable data for planning, vaccination programmes, and emergency response in the event of disease outbreaks affecting livestock populations.
Stakeholders in the agricultural sector have welcomed the reforms, describing them as a major step toward sustainable livestock production and improved national food security. They also urged state governments and private investors to collaborate fully with the Federal Government to ensure successful implementation of the programme.

The Ministry of Livestock Development reaffirmed its commitment to working with pastoral communities, farmers, development partners, and security agencies to ensure peaceful coexistence and long-term sustainability in the sector.
