Lagos Suspends Loading of Goods on BRT Buses

LAGOS, NIGERIA — MAY 20, 2026

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has announced the immediate suspension of the movement and loading of goods on all regulated public transport buses, popularly known as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses, across Lagos State.
According to the transport authority, the directive is aimed at improving passenger safety, ensuring comfort, and maintaining the operational efficiency of the state’s mass transit system.
LAMATA stated that strict enforcement of the ban will begin on June 1, warning that operators and commuters who violate the directive would face sanctions.

The agency explained that the practice of transporting goods on BRT buses has increasingly disrupted passenger movement, caused congestion within buses, and posed safety concerns for commuters using the public transport network.

The authority urged all bus operators, drivers, and passengers to comply fully with the new regulation, noting that the measure forms part of ongoing efforts to improve transportation services and maintain orderliness within the state’s transit system.

LAMATA reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation system for residents of Lagos State.
