Nigerian Government Condemns Daily Trust for Spreading Fake and Divisive News
Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has sharply criticized Daily Trust for what it describes as a series of fake, divisive, and inflammatory reports. This condemnation was voiced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press conference held on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at the National Press Centre in Abuja.

The Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to maintaining a free and open relationship with the media, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s democratic principles. However, Idris expressed concern over what he termed as a pattern of reckless reporting by certain media outlets, specifically naming Daily Trust.
Idris accused Daily Trust of consistently publishing false and sensational stories intended to destabilize the nation. He cited several instances where the newspaper allegedly spread misinformation, including claims about the government’s involvement in the Niger Republic coup, unfounded reports of foreign military bases being established in Nigeria, and false accusations of renaming the Murtala Mohammed Expressway in Abuja.
The Minister particularly condemned a recent report by Daily Trust, which falsely accused the government of signing an agreement to promote LGBTQ rights. Idris labeled this allegation as “despicable and wicked,” emphasizing that no such clause exists in any government document. He noted that the story had incited unrest among religious leaders and communities, further endangering national stability.
Despite the severity of these accusations, Idris stated that the government remains committed to civility and the rule of law. He assured that while the government has not resorted to draconian measures, it will pursue legal action against the newspaper. Additionally, a formal complaint will be lodged with the Nigerian Press Association’s Ombudsman.
“The Federal Government once again restates its friendly policy towards ethical media and free speech. We would, however, not take fake news and disinformation that would injure the peace of our country and its national security lightly,” Idris concluded.
The Minister of Budget and National Planning is expected to provide further clarification on these issues. The government reiterated its call for responsible journalism and urged the media to uphold the principles of truth and accountability.
