FG Inaugurates Technical Sub-Committee On Livestock Development

Abuja, Nigeria – February 3, 2026

The Federal Government has inaugurated the National Economic Council (NEC) Technical Sub-Committee on Livestock Development, reaffirming its commitment to reposition the livestock sector as a key driver of economic growth, food security, and national cohesion.

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, inaugurated the committee at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. He explained that the committee’s core mandate is to harmonise existing policy frameworks and accelerate the development of a clear, actionable roadmap for consideration and eventual adoption by the National Economic Council.

According to the minister, the technical sub-committee was established to provide strong institutional and technical support to the high-level committee on livestock development, which is chaired by the Governor of Kebbi State, Dr Nasir Idris. He noted that the creation of the sub-committee became necessary in view of the demanding schedules of state governors, ensuring that work on livestock reforms continues efficiently and without delay.
Senator Bagudu, who also chairs the technical sub-committee, stressed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regards livestock development as central to Nigeria’s broader economic strategy, agricultural productivity, and food security agenda. He added that a well-structured livestock sector has the potential to generate employment, improve rural livelihoods, reduce farmer–herder conflicts, and strengthen national unity.

The minister further emphasized that effective livestock development requires close collaboration among the federal, state, and local governments. He noted that the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning will serve as the coordinating secretariat, ensuring policy coherence, alignment of priorities, and effective implementation across all levels of government.

He expressed optimism that the work of the technical sub-committee would lay a solid foundation for sustainable livestock development and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s long-term economic transformation.
