House of Representatives Member Yahaya Tongo Dies at Fifty

The House of Representatives has announced the death of Hon. Yahaya Bauchi Tongo, the member representing Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State.

Tongo reportedly died in Abuja on Friday after a brief illness, according to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi.

The late lawmaker was serving his first term in the Green Chamber and was widely known for his active participation in legislative activities and constituency representation. He also served as Chairman of the Nigeria–United Arab Emirates Parliamentary Friendship Group, where he played a role in fostering parliamentary relations between Nigeria and the UAE.

His death has been met with sadness within the National Assembly and among political stakeholders in Gombe State and beyond.

Reacting to the development, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Tongo as a committed legislator, grassroots politician, and public servant who dedicated himself to the welfare of his constituents.

According to the Speaker, the late lawmaker made significant contributions to governance, legislative work, and constituency development during his time in office.

Abbas noted that Tongo’s dedication to public service earned him the respect of colleagues within the National Assembly and members of his constituency.

Born and raised in Gombe State, Tongo built a reputation as a politician closely connected to the grassroots. His election to the House of Representatives marked a significant milestone in his political career, providing him with a platform to advocate for the interests of the people of Gombe, Kwami, and Funakaye federal constituency.

During his tenure, he participated in debates and legislative engagements aimed at addressing national development issues while also pursuing projects and initiatives targeted at improving the lives of his constituents.

The House of Representatives extended its condolences to the family of the deceased lawmaker, the people of Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, and the Government and people of Gombe State.

Lawmakers and political associates have also paid tribute to Tongo’s life and service, describing his death as a significant loss to the National Assembly and the people he represented.

His passing creates a vacancy in the House of Representatives, with electoral processes expected to be initiated by the Independent National Electoral Commission at the appropriate time in accordance with constitutional provisions.
