Ogun East 2027: Eniowo Akanbi Babatunde Steps Forward for Senate Despite Abiodun Consensus
The race for Ogun East Senatorial District is getting more interesting by the day. Eniowo Akanbi Babatunde has declared his intention to contest the Senate seat — and he is doing so with full awareness that the district’s APC leaders have already moved to anoint Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun as their consensus candidate.
That unanimous declaration, Babatunde made clear, does not close the door on his ambition. His team intends to obtain the nomination form, which effectively puts the position in contest — a bold move in a political climate where consensus decisions are often treated as settled matters.

The field is already crowded with heavyweight names. The incumbent senator for Ogun East is no less than former Governor Gbenga Daniel, who is equally campaigning to hold onto the seat. With Abiodun now entering the race and Babatunde refusing to stand aside, what was shaping up to be a straightforward succession has quickly become a three-way contest worth watching.

Babatunde’s entry is built on a case he believes the numbers support. Speaking from Ijebu-Ode, he pointed to unemployment, shrinking opportunities, and what he described as a gap between what Ogun East sends to Abuja and what the district actually receives in return. The potential is there, he argued — the people, the culture, the resources — but it has not been converting into real legislative impact at the national level.
His agenda centres on the people who rarely make it to the front of the political conversation. He is pledging legislation on youth empowerment and job creation, infrastructure investment across every local government in the district, and meaningful improvements in education and healthcare. “This is about giving every segment of Ogun East a voice,” he said, “from market women and farmers to students and professionals.”
With 2027 approaching and political temperatures rising across Ogun State, Babatunde’s declaration signals that the battle for Ogun East Senatorial District will not be settled quietly — consensus or not.
