Abuja, Nigeria – Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), announced that Organized Labour has rejected President Bola Tinubu’s proposal to implement a ₦250,000 minimum wage in exchange for an increase in petrol prices.
Speaking at a press briefing, Ajaero explained, “Accepting ₦70,000 was the best way to save Nigerians from further hardship.” He detailed the events of last week’s meeting with the President, where the proposal was presented.

“At last week’s meeting, the President brought a proposal that ‘I will give you guys ₦250,000’ if you allow me to equally increase the pump price of petroleum products’ and we said, ‘No, we need to go and consult’,” Ajaero recounted.
“Today, we went there to tell him, ‘No’. The labour movement can make sacrifices without allowing Nigerians to suffer further on the increase in the pump price of petroleum products,” he added.
The NLC’s decision underscores their commitment to mitigating the economic impact on Nigerians amid rising costs of living and ongoing discussions about wage adjustments.
