Badaru Advocates for Enhanced ECOWAS Security Collaboration to Boost Defense Capabilities

Abuja, Nigeria — The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru CON, has called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff to intensify their collaborative security efforts. This initiative aims to improve the region’s defense capabilities in response to escalating security threats.

Minister Badaru made this call during the 42nd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff held in Abuja. The meeting, which commenced today, has convened top military leaders from across West Africa to address pressing security concerns in the region.

In his address, Badaru emphasized the critical importance of collective efforts in combating terrorism, cross-border crimes, and hybrid threats. He stressed the necessity for enhanced regional security cooperation to safeguard nations and promote sustainable development.

“This meeting will focus on critical issues, including the proposed ECOWAS Security Support Mission in Sierra Leone, ongoing peace operations, and the operationalization of the ECOWAS Standby Force,” Badaru stated.

The Minister urged for open dialogue, the sharing of expertise, and the development of collaborative solutions to strengthen security cooperation and enhance regional defense capabilities. He reiterated the commitment to achieving peace and security in West Africa, noting that the region’s security landscape is currently marked by complex challenges.

“Joint efforts towards countering terrorism, managing cross-border crimes, and other security threats are essential for the stability and prosperity of our region,” Badaru concluded.

The 42nd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff is expected to yield significant strategies and initiatives aimed at fortifying the defense mechanisms within West Africa, thereby fostering a safer and more secure environment for all member states.
